advantages of the 5e over the 4e?

yeah its like gaz car, running the T25 on the 5e, absolute response monster with still around 230hp @ 1bar and it is great for a certain application. Once again down to what you want but i can safely say the 5E Spools the TD05(his was a hybrid TD05 too with a larger comp wheel) very very well. Torque is there down low then around 4K your already going fast enough, after that rockets down the road.... Delivery is well impressive.

Im yet to experience the TD04 on a starlet, so i cant judge too much although it is of a similar size to the T25..... and on the 4E i thought that was a bit laggy. then again depends what your used to.

Suppose itll be a case of trial an error. im obviasly used to the td04 as ive been using it so long and my mates old glanza was running one too, we did however try a vf28 which is basically a ball bearing version of the td05 and it was far too unusable for the road but it did give some great punch at low boost when it did spool. so would be nice to try that on a 5e setup. im all up for trying varients but i havnt really conciderd it as anyone whos been in my 5e will know, its prettymuch lagless as in im hitting my full boost of just under a bar by less than 2800rpm

yeah dan was good to see the difference between abbott's and aze's last night, abbotts is a well quick starlet but but aze made it look slow, all completly different set up's tho,
abbott sort up brake's and go td05

my opinion... 4E doesnt not like bigger turbos, it ruins the drivability and becomes a lag monster, and the more i go in them the more i realize that the best turbo is the CT9(hybrid) as that is also what toyota intended ;) so by changing the turbo its against toyotas intentions too :)

only way out of that is more CC's...

this is my view after experiences many different set ups now on starlets now.

just coz people have gone 5e dont been that they all have to go for 400bhp, i went 5e coz i did'nt want to wait to 4-5k then get all the power within 500 rpm, which is going to be hard on the tranny, i wanted to have low down power and boost early on and not have to rev to 8k to get power

no offence taken mate.

I never have claimed to have driven a starlet with a 3sgte conversion but there are plenty of other lads out there that do big engine conversions in Novas etc and well handling concerns are usually raised. You say that you are the only one that can make comment on the handling of your car... but mate as Ive mentioned to you before... dont forget... you are the one who put your car into a ditch so obviously a problem existed with handling or the driver - again I am not trying to cause offence just merely disclosing all the facts. Also to suggest that putting an engine the size of a 3sGTE in a starlet and not effecting the handling/balance is slightly rediclous man. Its like stripping or adding significant weight from the back or the front IT WILL effect handling.. thats not my opinion that is simple fact.

Your car has worked its way into the conversation as you mentioned this "5E is the way to go as the 3SGTE is waaaaay to expensive so unless youve got 10-15K behind you, 5E alllllll the way...." I assume you meant by this comment that if money wasnt an issue 3SGTE would be the way to go? feel free to clarify.

I dont remember saying you were "talking out of your arse" but 12k stg for parts seems very extreme to me to do a 3SGTE conversion with 3k for all the labour that you paid for seeming very cheap actually.

As for all your experience on these matters mate... well you have stated above that you have "yet to experience a TD04 on a starlet" which for some time now has been pretty much one of the most popular turbo setups on the EP's

I guess Kons TD05 really gave me an idea of what a fantastic setup can feel like. And I am not talking about sheer power.. I am talking about a total package... a well balanced car.

I dont want this thread to turn into a bickering session or you taking it personal. I mean my car is fairly close to stock so this isnt a pissing competition mate I am just furthering the conversation.

well my starbo is 4bhp less than aze's and has more torque...and its a 4e. i doubt mine is any laggier than his, full boost at 4-4.5k.. so its not really a lag monster as such. obviously dyno figures varie alot but i believe his was dyno'd at EA the same as mine was?

i just cant see how a few extra cc's are ganna make that much of a difference? every bit helps i guess.

maybe within a month i could compare my 5E TD05 against a 4E CT20.
for now i only knows how a 5E pulls on 0.5 bar with a T20

i think people with a 5E mostly put direct a bigger turbo on it.
a TD05 on a 5E is as far as i can see a good set-up as a TD04 on a 4E gives the same drivabilety.

no experience of the 5e in turbo form but before the conversion i upgraded from a 4efe to a 5efe and the car felt much more responsive and punchy, so this must transfer over nicely in turbo form :)

look at the jap's stalet's they go 5e and done it for years,

as i said before.....it's kind of hard to beleive what the extra 166cc can do..BUT once u have driven in a 5e with a turbo on----i am sure many will never look at the 4e in the same light again

i used to say the same thing...until a friend drove me in his...even with the crappy ct9.....the car felt better...then when i drove his car myself.....i knew what i wanted to do with my ride from then on....lol

i respect the 4e....but i prefer the 5e....both can be made to be very good engines

There is so much you can do to aid spool/rev's etc.

You could say ANY turbo car does not like very big turbo's if it was something other than it rolled out of the factory with. If the setup is the same and only the turbo is bigger, then it will cause lag on any car.

(Unless it has been modded with ball bearing etc for the smart arses!)

Ofcourse 5E has it's advantages, no denying that, but your making kind of bold statements.

I really dont know, and quite frankly dont care what the best set up is... Its all down to the individual, for me it about fun,its a hobby, and a passion... we all love our cars because their our own and the way we like them....

For now my experiences are allowing me to make an opinion of the CT9 hybrid being the best set up to meet my criteria.... the future may say otherwise.....

i am aware of a larger turbo causing lag but putting a larger turbo on a 1.3(personally) i dont think the power output/speed is worth doing...

I don't agree that putting a bigger turbo on a 4E is not worth it. All depends on what bigger is. If you want a particular amount of power for example, then it is worth it for that individual.

K24 is bigger...TD04L is bigger...

I'd rather a K24 or TD04L turbo over a CT9 to be honest.

One user posted that the TD04L setup sucked, because his mates cars just span the wheels when it hit boost. Mine doesnt, I can put the power down through 2nd to 5th. Why's that? Maybe its my setup, suspension, wheels tyres etc? Was the others users setup not so good? Did he neclect the chassis?

My old TD04L setup sucked. There was a problem somewhere, which caused major lag. Thing did not hit 1bar until like 5,000rpm! Now if you had a ride in my car with my old setup I could understand, but now the engine is fully balanced, running lighter componants to help with rev's and hits 1bar at about 3,500rpm as per my RR sheet.

What I am trying to say is, don't rule all larger turbo setups out from a ride in a particular users car. All setups are different and some better than others.

I'm not against the 5E setup at all. I had a sprare block lying around I could of used for a 5E setup, not sure why I did not go for it! Just did not think at the time. Wish sometimes I did go 5E reading peoples results, but will just have to stick with good old 4E now.

i think give it another 6 months and the 5e market will be alot wider. as i stated above i want to try a td05 but the purpose of my build was responce so staying td04 and gaining quicker spool is a great match.

give me a few months and we may have a good comparision of 1.4 bar td04 on a 4e vs 5e
