Engine just gone BANG!!!

I was driving round today as normal and for some reason this loud bang happend and i saw a big cloud of white smoke coming from the back and smoke soming from under the bonnet, at first i thought that the turbo had gone :s but nope

So i pulled over n opened the bonnet to see engine oil all over the place and coolant on the floor underneath the car.

Then i got my torch to have a look abit better to find out i could see a hole about 6 inch long in the crank case and inside the engine and crank its self.

But yet there was no oil check light on the dash or anything to say there was something up within the engine or anything so im puzzled to hell now.

where you flat out when it happend or under heavy load? sounds like detonation / timming out or bad tune... is the car stock or what...

I had just set ovv again because a bus pulled out from a junction blocking the road, was at about 3.5 to 4000 revs roughlyish.

Yeah the car is standard apart from a HKS Adjustable actuator and a aftermarket exhaust, wasnt under heavy load or anything.

At first when i got it home and on my drive i thought (after i stripped most of the front end off to see the hole)
could the timing belt have snapped but when i thought that it was getting dark and i was meeting up with a friend so ill have a look in the morning when i carry on stripping the fecker ready for the next engine i sorce :(

It's usually oil starvation that causes a rod to make a break for freedom. When did you last dip it and have you done any work to the car recently?

I dipped it this morning before i went out coz i changed the oil about a week or so agao n it was up to the max mark so had plenty of oil in.

No, not done any work to it on the engine, done bits n bobs to the car like tyres n exhaust (its knocking on the rear axel) n stuff but thats it

Very strange, there's usually a justified reason behind an engine failure mate but that's not to say you haven't just got unlucky. Worth looking for some sort of cause all the same in case it offers trouble further down the line. Wouldn't be the first oil return hose to split and kill an engine for example.

Let us all know what you find in the morning.

Yeah i know, my brain hurts just thinking about what it could be, tbh im hoping but not at the same time, that it will be just that the timing belt had snapped.
Iv just applied for a few loans to get some money together to buy another engine n then it will be back on the road again soon.........Hopefully, everyone cross there fingers for me please :)

These are non-interference engines so it'll not be the belt buddy. Fingers crossed and all!

there is no overlap of the valves into the space where the piston travels. in other words, with the piston fully up (top dead centre, tdc) and the valves fully open, the 2 will not meet.

this isn't strictly true though, as it can happen if the head/block has been skimmed a decent amount!

I know what interferance and non-interferance means matey, seen as i am a mechanic :)

and thats why im doing the work myself

but if the belt had snapped then valves would have been open dumpin fuel in and if the piston was down at time of det it would of had an obscure effect wouldnt it or could have been crank bearings but im sure u will find the problem in the day light tomoz how old was the engine?

If the conrod has snapped and been ejected through the side of the block the cause will more than likely be, as Jay has already suggested, either oil starvation or a loss of oil pressure to the rod bearing. There's a number of causal reasons, but assuming your oil light actually works and the engine wasn't rattling it's tit's off prior to the fatal big bang, I'd suspect either a blockage in the oil gallery that runs through the crankshaft or a rod cap nut has come loose.

One thing is for sure, a timing belt snapping isn't going to result in a hole in the side of the engine block!

Yeah ill just pull everything away tring to get a better view inside the engine.

it was a 1996 done just over 88k not sure if that miles or km tho

Yeah all the lights work on the dash perfectly, can see them all when u turn the ignition on.

Nope, no rattles or anything, was driving like a dream until then

What oil did you use when changed it? and how much oil did you put in?

Also what is the car's mileage? Was the engine completely standard or was it modified at any stage? I know that you said that the car is standard but how do you know what previous owner did to it? did you buy a fresh import or not?

I used Mobil ESP 5w30 oil and put I think if my memory serves me correctly about 4.3 litres in roughly.

I I never did anyhing to the engine, the previous owner put a Hks adjustable actuator and a after market exhaust that is knockin its tits off on the axel coz its a 3inch and iv been told by a specialist that makes exhausts that the best size for a standard one is about 2.5inch, someone can correct me if that statement is wrong or not.

No, not a fresh import, been in the country since 23rd November 2006 to be exact :)
