For all who have removed a 4efte engine....

also, 2 more things i'd add, remove the crank pulley for more clearance on the chassis leg and pull the engine out on an angle, so the left side raises first, will make life easier

like so

I was just under the thinking that it will be more work since the box will just be going onto the other block so it can just stay there meaning I won't need to remove its mount or the driveshaft at that side etc

Getting the shafts in and out is probably what I'm most worried about doing but if alligning the engine to box when going back in is tricky then i suppose maybe it is just easier for the whole lot to come out.

I was also just being a typical tight arse scot not wanting to buy new gearbox oil!:p

Cheers guys:)

It'll be more work seperating the gearbox from the engine in place, really doesnt take that long to get the lot out as one and seperate on the floor.

If you want you can leave the drive shafts in, just remove the 2 bolts holding the hubs to strut....then pull the hubs out the way while taking the drive shaft out the hub. if you see what I mean

Also go out the bottom, again too much hassel going out through the top.

Agreed ^ but the inner CV's normally come out without any problems when you remove the clip.

You will regret trying to leave the box in and just take the engine out if you go by that route, it can be a real pain in the arse as there is very little room on the cambelt side to move the engine over to get the clutch past the box and aligning the box to the engine when its back in is also a bastard!

Thats what I was thinking if I left the box in, ok I think you've persuaded me to take the whole lot out.;)

What clip on the inner cv's are you talking about? I thought you just pryed them out of the block? Like take the the hub off for movement then just pull the inner cv out along with the housing, or do you mean separate the cv joing and housing?

take the engine and box out together it's miles easier.

droping it out from the bottom is easiest, if you have use of a ramp, if not then out the top isnt to bad.

as for drive shafts, undo hubs from ball joints, and prise the inner CV joints out from the box, but remember to take oil ou the box first cos it will be very messy otherwise.

the clips on the inner cv joints cant be taken off till there out the box, and i highly recomend not to touch these clips there there for a reason,

a bit of gently persausion with a club hammer and a crow bar works wonders

well to be honest if you take the mani and dounpipe off and remove the radiator, all the hoses , you can take the block out on its own via the top of the car, this way there is no need to take out the gear box, trust me this is the best route, i rebuilt my engine.

You've changed your opinion then!:p

Thats the way I thought you went about removing the driveshafts, I don't have a ramp so it'll have to come out the top.

Thanks for the confirmation.;)

yep, if the head is already off like it was when i rebuilt my ngine then leaving the box in is easier.

when i wrote that i didnt think about if the head wasnt already off.

and after recently taking the engine out with the gearbox, i can confirm that its easier to take it out all in one lol

but defo do not remove those clips from the inner shafts

Ok I'll go that way then, the clips we're talking about are the one's holding the boots on? Thats what I'm thinking about anyway, I don't even know how to do them back up!

i'm not.

i dont think dave is either because there is absolutely no reason to remove these at all.

when you pull the shafts out there is clips on the inner cv joint, these get pushed in the gear box and keeps them in there.

Lol! Ok I see, I think I've heard of them getting broken so I'll be careful with that, is there a clip on both sides not just the gearbox?

I didn't understand why you/dave were mentioning the boot clips as I didn't think they needed touching.

Thanks for clarifying that.:)

There is an easier way than taking the shafts out from the outer CV's but if your comfortable doing it that way then thats probably best.

:)

I wasn't planning on taking the shafts out of the outer cv's, I was just going to take the hub off the lower arm to give it enough movement to pull the whole shaft out of the box and block.

Although I could do with changing the outer cv boot's so probably may aswell take the shafts out completely.

How do you do up them stupid clips that come with the boots?
