cheap things to do to make it faster

Filter, although you won't notice much BHP increase. A good exhaust system, but again you won't notice much, maybe better throttle response, port and polish you're CT9 manifold and maybe you're cylinder head.

Not so sure the first things you should do include removing the manifold and head!

As corofin mentioned, bypassing the hi/lo switch will instantly net you some appreciable gains without any risk. Slightly more boost and power without pushing the standard setup.

Exhaust will gain you a decent amount if done well, however a pod filter or similar open element will likely LOSE power. It's just noisier.

After a small boost increase and a decent exhaust you can start looking into upping the boost further via a boost controller of some description, just don't get too carried away...

were do u stick the washers bud ?? take it is just at the very end of the actuator were it clips on

between actuator bracket and compressor housing.. use 1 washer for each bolt first and check the boost and add more if needs be.. all your doing is putting more pressure on the spring and that = more boost :)

yea no all that just never heard of it getin done hum mite just do that till i get this new starlet done does it hold the boost ok tho

Done correctly, by somebody with skill and experience, yes. I have no doubt there would be a difference. In modifying the head you will undoubtedly alter the torque curve likely losing some low end grunt and gaining some high end pull. This will make the car feel faster and read higher on a dyno, however in real world scenarios HP figures don't necessarily produce results.

All that aside, it's an expensive process and requires significant dismantling of the engine bay. In contrast bypassing the hi/lo takes all of 25 seconds and has immediate benefits across the entire rev range not to mention potentially better economy.

On a totally stock starlet I would wager a well fabricated exhaust would give you the biggest bang for buck gains.

Considering people have gone 11's in the 1/4 mile at 120+ mph with stock standard heads, I think there are other areas where more economical gains can be made. Any professional headwork is going to be pricey, at least in this part of the world likely to exceed the value of the car! For similar money you could replace intake/exhaust manifolds/turbo/front mount intercooler/custom exhaust etc and end up with 50%+ increase in power vs perhaps 5% with a ported head alone. My only point is it should be a way down the priority list for those new to the modifying scene.

where the actuator bracket bolts to the turbo compressor housing theres 2 bolts.. put washers between bracket and turbo on bolts

Front mounted air filter (removes restricive efi pipe)
adjusable actuator with boost set to around 0.8 bar (or use the simple washer method as mentioned above)
exhaust system and decat

fairly simple mods and pretty cheap if you buy second hand. This would give you a very noticable difference over a stock setuo.

Fatman - I find your comments most useful! In your opinion what would be the cheapest and the correct way of getting the car to 200 bhp?

Regarding the topic - if you keep your cat on - replacing the mani on a standard boost won't give you any noticeable performance!
I'd say get an HKS actuator - put it at 0.8 BAR and that would be the cheapest upgrade ever!
