DIY: digital air intake temp

I did this once to check it out once just really, I didnt have anything but a thermocouple and reader, so I just cut the head of the thermocouple and twisted the 2 wires together. I used one of the pipes that go out to the air con idle up solenoids to thread the wires through into the inlet track. All I needed to do was bend the hose the wires passed through over and secure it with a cable tie. Temperary job so can be done better.

That little black thing is the thermocouple head basically, as long as its in the air flow it will read air temp. The throttle body is an easy place to access with your fingers and a properly sealed "port" is already there to fit the bits through.

BUT TB will get hot from the heat thar travvles from the head etc... so reading wont be as accurite...

where is this seal port???

i like this idea actually! if your worried about it snapping off the cable and the sensor going into the engine, just mesh the throttle body. i would imagine it would be ok. might do this!

meshing the TB will be bit ristrictive

thats wat i was thinking i think it will be fine just put it at the bottom part of the ic pipe so it isnt dangling and there isnt alot of wire im gonna get one as well and this is how im gonna do mine

I bought one of these ages ago just to put in the car so I could see what the temp was outside but I never got a chance to fit it. Maybe Ill use it as an air temp sensor instead :)

This is a really good idea man! I wanted a cheap useful mod, you've shown me the light. Repped:)

but how would i know that the signal the iat is putting out matches the guage input signal?

lol by using a resistor (if and only if it is nessecarry). Or you can use megasquirt and watch it real time.:p
Seriously if you finally deside to go IAT route (wich will be closer to intake valves and more accurate) sent a pm and i will try to tell you how you can go with this and how you can match it with a gauge.

As said above Sheldon, the closer to the head the more accurate the reading of intake air temp. The air may pick up/loose temp travelling up the cooler piping, as near to the head as possible for a better idea of what intake temp actually is.

The sealled port I was talking about, you have a choice of 2, they are the vacuum pipes that are machined into the throttle body casting for the air con solenoids pipes.

cool thanks... so i can use one of them and there would be no chance (or less) that it will be sucked into the engine.. ?

any pics of the port you saying? :) cheers

just bought one of these just now, looks pretty cool and will be nice to keep an eye on things. il silicone it into place.
im very confident that it will hold the sensor in place.

just dont use normal silicone mate use metal to metal it will stand better against the heat and clean the pipe with some thinner before too
