Your only young once, go and try it! Alot of my mates have recently gone over and they all love it, another friend is leaving for OZ at the end of the month too. They all found work within two weeks of being there.

If you need me to ask them how they went about visa's, etc... I can find out no problem Johnny.

Best of luck anyway ;)

im here now...any help I can offer please do not hesitate to ask buddy :) On the work front, lots of jobs going. Just read a report recently about how Western Australia is going to be really short of workers over the next 15-20 years due to the massive expansion projects they have going at the moment in infrastucture and mining...drawback is it is a bit more expensive to live there than eastern Oz

Booking flights - either of ye still students? You can get cheap flights through student represenattive bodies

Visa - fairly cheap, best bet is to get a working holiday visa and then when you get here try and tie down a job where they will sponsor on a tempprary residents visa. To earn your second year visa you may have to do some fruit picking etc for about 6 months (thats if your stuck and you dont get sponsored)

Lining up work - what are you skilled at? Do you have a HGV licence? Are you a welder or a tradey of some sort?

dont have my trade papers, but worked as a spark for over 4 years,no hgv licence.ill work at whatever pays the most, doesnt matter what it is.
girlfriend has a degree in interior desigh/fashion.

when you say sponser, does that mean whatever im working at,the employer will have to promise its a secure job?

Yes and no. Mining is booming, everything else is slowing down some (except in the major cities). You can work as a sparky in the mines, might be diifficult without trade papers, I really don't know but the pay would be ace. If you can get a truck licence, all the mines are really short haul truck drivers. The pay is crazy!!!!

girlfriend has a degree in interior desigh/fashion.

She could definitly find a job in one of the cities. A mate's gf works in a dress shop in Brissy (has similar degree), not exactly what she wanted work wise but she doesn't mind it.

Ya, pretty much. A little bit easier to get sponsored through mining BUT if you try working in the West as a sparky, I know they are massively short so definite potential for getting sponsored there. In the report i read they mentioned Ireland specifically as a country that could meet the gap in their workforce and a couple of initiatives werre coming online with regards to visas etc, be good to career advisors/ student reps, even try calling Oz embassy in ireland?

Deffo jobs for sparks for sure, I actually met a bunch of Irish sparkys in this minng town where im based (when on hitch)..they were working on infrastrcuture projects on the mines themselves.

I did geology in college and just got real lucky as I graduated just when the mining boom took off last summer...so tonnes of jobs for us, was hired before I came over. So ya, working as a geologist for BHP Billiton on their coal mines and coal exploration projects (central Queensland)

No bother lad, i'm on this alot these days so if more questions come to you ill do my best to answer them

You need a separate certificate for mine work as the regulations are more specific, its all explosive proof fittings and shit.

Johnny I would go for it, I nearly did it many years ago and it fell through as the tenant renting my house turned out to be a dick. I have regretted not going ever since, my friend went 6 years ago and now says he will never come back to live "in this shit hole".

When I was looking you had to do an exam to be qualified to work as a spark out there anyway, so its not out of the question yet.

As WeeJohn said you need to get 'ticketed', quite alot of companies will pay for your training and inductions on the understanding that if you leave before a certain time you have to pay them for all the training and mine-site inductions.

98-glanza ...heaps of work for carpenters mate. I had an induction at Peak Downs mine (Moranbah, QLD) the other day and they have their own carpenters wing...like a whole building for their onsite carpenters :)
