engine hoisting out of/into the bay

for those who rebuild engines in their sleep, which is the easiest way around hoisting the engine back into the bay. is it easier/better to put in the engine solo then mate the trans later or bring it all in at once..?
wondering because i would suppose squeezing it all in at once may be a tad bit of a challenge because of the transmission bulge.

what would work best as i am about to hit that phase of the rebuild..

it best to do it with everything intact including gearbox and all ancillaries.
Thats how i did mines then it was just a simple case of fastening the mounts to the chassis and plugging the loom back in.
It will be best to have another pair of hands to help you lower it into position.

my initial plan is to drop the whole lump in at once but it may have to go in at some tilt with the trans starting then the belt-side following. i have a beefy crane so it will just be a matter of carefully picking the hoist points on the engine and trans.. :)

I put mine in all built up lifted car over engine then lowered car down and lifted engine with crane into place took 2 hours

did mine the same on 3 cars.

fully built up the engine and box inc the wiring loom. lifted the car up on an engine hoist, slid the engine underneath, lowered the car down, then put the engine hoist on the engine and lifted it up to get the mounts on and it was done :)

I usually prefer dropping the engine and box in together, found it a lot easier than trying to split/reunite them whilst in the bay.

When dropping them in from the top you have to get a decent angle to clear the battery tray with the gearbox end so if you have the room lifting into place from below might be a better option. Depends on your approach though, the last rake of them I've lowered into place from above.

I removed an refitted my engine and box in my single garage. Was a little tight, but was easy enough :)

Box on, but taking the exhaust manifold, turbo, oil filter and power steering lower bracket off makes it a lot easier. All those things are easily worked at at the front of the engine and it gives you more room to get round the drivers side engine mount. I tilt it, put it in the top, set it down on the ground and level it up, raise it up into position and bolt it in. I dont have a load leveler I just use a chain on the engine hooks.

those who chose the option of lifting the car over the engine, where did you anchor the chassis in order to lift it..?

i used a strop wrapped around the bottom crossmember at the front. I made a little wheeled trolley and I slide the engine and box underneath from the side just behind the front wheel.

Aye, forgot to mention, removing the bonnet makes it much easier to both fit the engine and hook up the connections afterwards mate. Highly recommend it!
