look if your going to the trouble of the head gasket and timing belt get and put in a new water pump aswell its cheap and could save you in the long run

if it was me i would get all new gaskets and seals for head even a new pcv valve change the water/oil pump as they are prob after getting damaged ie seals ect i would give the tubo a look at aswell as that grunge in your sump has now been everywhere its all money man but its preventing this happening again in the future by the sounds of it your engine was due a good overhaul

when getting the headgasket dpne mate there are alot of other parts worth changin while ur in there n ud maybe be best sourcin them urself coz a garage may struggle. ull need the full gasket set inc head gasket, rocker, inlet, exhaust gaskets aswell. a thermostat as tht could be the faulty part tht caused ur blown gasket. ull needto get ur oil flushed and replace the filter too. youll need head bolts and its probly worth checking if there is a water leak anywhere in there while the head is off. it would b worth having it skimmed too but ur garage should arrange this. hope tht helps.

Toyota will do them, they do everything lol Should only be a few pounds.

You can also get a full engine gasket set from them, works out cheaper than buying separately.

if you've cooked it, expect to get the block decked also.

YES

This is a must for all Starlet engines if they've been above normal operating temps like yours.

They NEVER seal without decking, which means engine out.

With these motors, when they go wrong, do not skimp on cheap repairs, as they will fall apart again.

I tried to get away without decking 3 times, until my 4th head gasket went, and I rebuilt the entire engine.

Cost about £1300 all together, but it's now bullet proof.

List of things you need to replace, in order to acheive maximum reliability once rebuilt.

Headgasket - Toyota OEM ones are brilliant and are only £35

Headbolt set

All other engine gaskets, again go OEM and they're mint

Big End Barings

Crank Barings

Thrust Washers

Piston Rings

Block removed, decked and crosshatched, and chemically cleaned.

Head checked and skimmed if needed

Stem seals replaced

Timing Belt

Aux Belts

Timing belt tensioner

Radiator, as they block up and cause higher running temps.

Thermostat

Oil

Oil Filter

Coolant

Clean out all the oil in your coolant pipes/rad hoses.

Plugs

Doing all this at once will ensure an engine good for about 50k at 1.0BAR :)

What stu said! get the gasket kit mate, comes with, head gasket, rocker cover seal, valve stem seals, injector seals, water pump seals, the hole lot, you might aswell re-lap your valves in aswelll while your there mate, not a big job but takes abit of time.. then youv got a fresh top end, Also i dont think the thermo stat housing has a gasket, you use sealant (IIRC)

So sigma, what your saying is?

If your head gasket goes,

take the block out? replace your big end bearings, thrust washers? piston rings? lol

Once hot, all 4e/5e blocks pull up around the bolts. Fact.

Yours will have sealed, but will be out slightly.

What you think mate? If block is bent dosent seem it is nessecary?
You always can check it tho..
And if you go metal gasket then i strongly recomend it.
And it is not nessacary to take the block out or change everything...
Diy resurface ways works very well..!
I think sigma speaks from experience..:p and he would do it even if it wasnt nessecary too..:p
