WTF? Dude lighten up I wasn't taking the piss out of you, I like thrashing cars every now and then and if thrashing an rx8 doesn't do it any harm then nice one. Maybe ask Santa for a sense of humour this year?

Sorry dude I obviously took it the wrong way...... Will lighten up :)

I had one last year. Nice cars to drive and to be in, not that quick, but very smooth to drive and the styling is very neat. They like a bit of fuel and occasionally some oil, but in my experience they don't drink it. They hate short journeys where they don't warm up enough and do NOT turn off when cold, very prone to flooding. As said above they love a daily trip to the rev limit and sound awesome on the limit :)

Love them.

My mum has owned a PZ for the last four years and it has barely missed a beat.

That being said I would still stick with my GT for daily work though, the tax and the fuel bills look manageable until you start paying them. You could almost keep three GT's on the road for the same money.

Not just saying this - she's actually started nicking my GT! :drive:

they are a lot of car for the money and inside the cabin feels a pretty special place to be. would love to know what they sound like with a proper exhaust system.

Imo I would rather an rx7 if your keep the starlet anyway why not get a rx7 and use it as a fast weekend car!! I have been in quite a few 7's as i live just round the corner from re:worx :D and they are a seriously cool car and my god do they sound awesome!!! when on idle and on the limiter hahah

Just my 2 pence worth hahah

Just thought I'd share today's experience of borrowing my ma's RX8 for the day.

I do 60-65 miles on the daily commute which is a 50/50 mix of country and city driving. The GT usually stings me a tenner daily. Did the same run today and it stung me a tenner on the way up and another bloody tenner on the way down.. That's seems fair enough until I calculate it out on a monthly basis - Difference of £200 and that's only for getting to and from a place of torture.

Add to that the fact I couldn't find a fecking parking space big enough and I'll stick to my trusty 4E for a while longer! :haha:

ye i heard they were thirsty on fuel and you have to work them to get any decent power from them, did u give it a little throttle? how did the performance compare to your GT and what power is ur GT running? nice cabin and drive?

Beautiful thing to pilot. Very comfortable in traffic and the handling is toight, toight like a toiger.

Couldn't fault it except for the fuel consumption.

Seemed to have plenty of grunt although you do have to use a heavy foot to get the most out of it. The Starlet feels a lot punchier due to the difference in power delivery but overall I was very impressed. Top end is pretty sweet too. Only had one accidental sideways moment when exiting a fuel station.. lol

Comparison : 1995 Toyota Starlet GT Auto with circa 160ps versus 2007 Mazda RX8 PZ manual with circa 231ps.

good little review mate :) i like how they look good and the cabin looks like a nice place to be....fuel consumption does appear to be its weak spot! and the fact they depreciate stupidly fast

It ticks every box in everything I want in a car - performance wise, handling, style, practicality, Q car ability to hide in a city centre...
Yes its not for everyone, but thats what makes me love it more - I love the haters!
Fuel wise im seeing 18-22 based on heavy urban and extra urban. Oil wise? about 200ml every 1k miles roughly - its hard to measure but id say thats not far off, as I always just top it up.
People comment about them using oil like its a bad thing - its not - and its subjective as to its useage bein based on throttle position.
Yes its only 192bhp - but its more than enough to get into trouble - this is possibly the least powerful car ive owned yet the first ive acquired points in!!!
Handling is unparalleled in anything ive experience maybe bar a vx220 turbo - but this is a 4 seater coupe in full trim!
there are a few interesting videos on youtube of guys in 8s leaving rx7s for dead on the touge, simply because they can stay right on it in the craziest of bends.
Less is more where the powers concerned lol! the delivery is exquisite, so so linear the whole way to redline around 8k (mines a 192), so the chances of you cuffing it up mid bend are slim. Lets not forget it was designed to be in a different market - a grand touring coupe, designed to cover obscene distances in total comfort.
Trips to Jays used to exhaust me in the starlet/mx5, but in the 8 I cruised there and home like it was no distance at all!!! Ive travelled to Armagh 3 times in a day in it and got out the far side like it was a trip to the shops.
The only mod ive made to mine is the HKS panel filter and resonator mods, which probably reaped me a whopping 2bhp max, at peak, over like a 5rpm band lol, but the noise is immense lol!!!
As for 50/60k rebuilds, its pure folklore, much the same as 200bhp starlets with no mods like you see on gumtree.
The aussies have these running for over 280,000 miles on the same original build with just service work to maintain. People forget these are the most basic engines going, similar to 2 stroke in principle. No head gaskets, valves, cams etc. Genius.
heres an interesting fact:
At about 13,000rpm harmonic vibrations will destroy a RENESIS, but it could theoretically live its entire, long life just shy of that.
