Make: Toyota
Model: Starlet GT
Year: 1991
Engine size/type: 1330cc

Any mods: TD04L and supporting mods running 250bhp

Type of use (road/track): Road with very odd 1/4mile thrown in.

I have 2 litres of Castrol SMX S 75w-85 Fully Synthetic Manual Transmission Fluid, do you think this would be ok to use in my Starlet GT with a Quaife Mechanical(non clutch type) LSD?

I was also thinking of adding in a bottle of High performance Lucas Transmission Fix that I have. My second gear is quite hard to go into and will grind on a fast change untill the gear oil is heated up then it works perfect. Supposidly this additive will cure that.

Thanks for any info.

It will be ok for the gearbox though I would lean more towards 75w-90

Is the diff front or rear?

Cheers

Any suggestions? Im lost for choice.

If you want the best then its the likes of the ester based oils, Silkolene pro S, Motul 300v bnut they are not cheap.

As good alternatives have a look at the Motul 8100 Xcess 5w-40, Fuchs Titan Supersyn and the Mobil 1 5w-40.

Do you mean 10w-60? If so the oil quality is fine but not the correct grade for your car, its way to thick.

A good 5w-40 synthetic is ideal.

If you imagine trying to stir treacle, that is what it is like for your engine on SAE60, SAE40 is much thinner at operating temp so is more like stirring water, less drag on the engine = more power and less wear due to friction.

And less heat too.

As far as I'm aware oil is just as much of an engine coolant as a lubrication. More friction will make an engine run hotter.

I think the most important aspect of a GOOD oil is the film coverage at operation temperature (Usually less than 14cst for SAE40).

Hence why all the ester based Synthetics are being recommended, their film thickness and coverage are far superior at all temperatures. Much less susceptible to shear.

When I told everyone I used 5w/30 fully synthetic everyone said I was stupid and that it was way too thin. Hmm...

Hopefully you can change A LOT of uneducated views on oil Oil Man.

i used to use silkolene pro-s which was obviously great but quite expensive, for the last couple of changes i used the halfords fully syn which i thought was quite good as its still £35 a go... is this not the case then??

5w-30 is fine, if engine is modded some what I would preferr 5w-40.

It will be fine, but worth £35 it is not. With home brands they are built to a very low cost. Halfords will go to a bunch of oil people and say "we want an oil that meets these specs but we only want to x pence per ltr for it". Oil people come back and say sure we can do that for you but it will be busing these cheap additives, this cheap base stock etc.

For £35 you can get a decent mid range synthetic such as the Motul 8100 Xcess and the Mobil 1 5w-40 http://www.opieoils.co.uk/c-656-5w-40.aspx

Guy,

The car is pretty modded!

Fully forged up..pistons, rods, balanced, overbored etc. Running over 100% over the stock HP from factory (133hp).

You reckon a good fully synthetic 5w/40 then?

At those temps I would go with 5w-40 or 10w-40 synthetic.

Never heard of that oil, have you got anymore info on it?

Oil Man,

I am currently using 5w/30 Redline oil and will change to 5w/40 as per your recommendation. However, Redline do not appear to do a 5w/40, so which brand of oil would you recommend?

I was thinking of Millers? They seem to have great feedback..
