Any mods: basic ct9 modifications

Type of use (road/track): fast road

Additional info (max oil temps, current oil used) : i use 5w 40 fully synthetic ford oil ( i work for ford :) )

What do you want a recommendation for? Engine, Gearbox etc?

gearbox i reccomend 75w 90 redline gearbox oil , ive always used 5w 40 past 3/4 years in starlets never had a problem

Hows it goin sir, could you explain the difference between10.40 and 05.40 engine oil?

http://www.toyotagtturbo.com/showthread.php?t=11002

Grade................0degC............10degC...... .........40degC...............100degC

0w-40...............665cst.............354cst........ ..........82cst................14cst
5w-40...............842cst............ 430cst..................91cst................14cst
10w-40.............874cst.............440cst .................91cst................14cst
15w-40...........1260cst.............595cst........... ......107cst................14cst

(CST = A unit of kinematic viscosity. 1 centistoke = 0.01 stoke.)

Essentially, a 10w40, has a certian viscosity (thickness, or ability to flow) at operating temperature. At operating temperature, 0w40,5w40,10w40, 15w40 all have the same viscosity, the first number, before the w is basically how thick it will be when cold.

At operating temperature a *w30 oil would be thinner than a *w40 oil.

So, a 0w40 will provide you with great cold start protection, as the car (oil pump etc) can move it (the oil) around more freely within the engine when cold, as you can see, it is the thinnest when starting from cold (although still not nearly as thin as when at operating temperature).

On top of this, the further apart the two numbers are (the 10 and the 40 for example in 10w40), the more additives are present to give the oil its multigrade property)

Oilman has given much more info in his post above, but that should give you a rough idea :)

Why has mine been ignored? :(

Sorry, didnt mean to miss it.

5w-40 is fine for the engine at those temps, though you can do much better then the halfords stuff that is not synthetic at all, it is what they call a hydrocracked mineral oil.

For the straight cut gearbox I would look at a decent synthetic such as the Silkolene Syn5 75w-90, not cheap but will help to protect the straight cut gears.

Cheers

Those choices are fine, the Ford oil is designed to shear down (thin) very quickly so keep it changed on a regular basis.

What redline you using for the box?

Ok, there is only one main difference between these two.

The 5w is slightly thinner ot cold temps then a 10w so this allows for better start up protection, warms up faster and circulates quicker.

When hot they are both the same viscositty SAE40 and this is measured at 100degc.

On a side note, 10w40 oils tend to be semi synthetic and 5w-40 tend to be synthetic.

You choice of oils are fine, you could upgrade the 10w-40 semi synthetic Mobil to a decent 5w-40 synthetic for better protection.

Royal Purple fine for the gearbox.

what you mean marketing ploy? surely it has to be what it says on the box! ?

I just remember reading years ago by some oil dude on the net that the halfords stuff is actually quite good and was made by a certain big oil company just packaged up different for halfords.

i think the idea is that that no oil can actually be fully synthetic??(correct if wrong) so that gives manufacturers all of lee-way as to what they can advertise their oils as.

its actually mineral oil.

it is mineral oil where the particles are manipulated to become a type of synthetic.

this type of synthetic is no where near as good as true synthetic, the problem being is that true synthetic is bloody expensive to make.

hence why true synthetics are £35+ per gallon, and bmw and vw specify this grade.

your £15-20 halfords and other stuff is this cheap manipulated stuff.

halfords oil is made by COMMA, comma make most of the cheap stuff, but it is not as good as what they actually put in there own bottles.

You can use either, semi or full synthetic. From a quality, performance and protection point of view synthetics are better in everyway.

For the engine a 5w-40, something like the Motul 8100 5w-40 is a good choice at a good price http://www.opieoils.co.uk/p-877-mot...line-and-diesel-engine-oil-100-synthetic.aspx

For the gearbox a synthetic too, if you want to go all out something like this http://www.opieoils.co.uk/p-850-silkolene-silktran-syn-5-75w-90-fully-synthetic-gear-oil.aspx
