is Castrol GTX Magnatec 10W-40 any good ? thats what ive allways used in my starlets . tho was going to use Motul v300 10/40 but it had a pix of a motorbike on the bottle is it the seams stuff for cars too ? cheers

The GTX is pretty basic stuff, cheap mineral oil. The Motul 300v is as good as it gets, the bike stuff is the same as the car stuff.

Have a looksy here http://www.opieoils.co.uk/p-868-motul-300v-power-5w-40-racing-lubricant-for-racing-cars.aspx

And you get GTTurbo discount too.

Cheers

Hmm.
I am currentli using Castrol Edge 10W60. For no special reason, but i think thats gifes the best protection for it, and i think it worth to buy an expensive oil, change it at half period with all the filters, couse thats the way u kep clean the engine, and it is cheaper than the damage thet the friction can cause...

I work for Nissan, and have access to 10w40 and 5w30. My car is mildly tuned, just exhaust, filter, 0.9bar boost. I often use an engine flush when i change my oil. Ive used 10w40 in most of my cars over the years and had no problems, should i go with that? I change my oil once a month as well.

If it is free then fine, however a proper synthetic would be better from a quality/protection point of view.

Use the 10w-40.

Nick,

At those temps I would look to use a good shear stable 5w-40 synthetic, an ester based one such as the Silkolene Pro S or the Motul 300v will out perform the 5w-50 from Halfords anyday.

With these you are looking to get approx 8 solid track hours before it starts to shear down.

Thanks a bunch sir, ill look into using that mate, what would that oil perform like on the road at temps of 80degrees? im guessing not very good, what would you advise to run on the road inbetween track days running 80degree temps?

Many Thanks for the help

I have an EP91 engine (stock) with a FMIC and stainless steel aftermarket
intake manifold and downpipe... I do quite a bit of drag racing

I'm currently (and for the longest time have been) using Royal Purple 20w50.

I see everyone else on here running nowhere near that weight oil....
I'm I doing my engine harm? I change oil & filter every 3000 miles

Out of interest:

Car: Daihatsu Charade GTti
Purpose: Race only
Box: Stock with torsen style LSD.
Current Oil: Silkolene Pro S 5w 40 / Redline Heavy Shock Proof

I'm not concerned for cold shifting, driveability. I want maximum protection for racing for a box with 50-70%+ torque increase on stock. It seems to have done the job well in the car I took it out of, I don't want to be breaking boxes.

What would you recommend?

I was also thinking of an engine oil with less friction modifiers, perhaps 10w 40 or something similar.

Btw, engine has a stock oil cooler which just uses engine coolant to circulate around the filter housing.

With your spec we would suggest an upgrade to a 5w-40 synthetic for better performance and protection.

Plenty to have a look at http://www.opieoils.co.uk/c-656-5w-40.aspx

For the engine I would stick with the Pro S, it really does not get better.

Heavy shock would not be my choice for the gearbox unless it was having real big shifting problems.

Have a look at the Silkolene Syn5 75w-90 or the Motul Gear 300 here http://www.opieoils.co.uk/c-673-75w-90.aspx

I have 2 litres of Castrol SMX S 75w-85 Fully Synthetic Manual Transmission Fluid, do you think this would be ok to use in my Starlet GT with a Quaife Mechanical(non clutch type) LSD?

I was also thinking of adding in a bottle of High performance Lucas Transmission Fix that I have. My second gear is quite hard to go into and will grind on a fast change untill the gear oil is heated up then it works perfect. Supposidly this additive will cure that.

Thanks for any info.
