rod had an argument... the block lost

was driving her quite fiercely today, overtook a car, floored it, had a bit of a boost spike according to my SAFC (1.1 bar) at 7100rpm, rod went bang...
lots of smoke, lots of unhealthy noises as she died on me.

so after dragging her back home we started taking her apart
engine was out in about 2 hours, will do the rest tomorrow

rod made a new hole :(

that side of the rod is supposed to be down

the rod also made an air hole at the back...

will be stripping the block down tomorrow to see how bad it all is.
not sure about rebuilding or not.
the list of spare parts will be rather extensive (anyone got a spare bottom end?)

i remember looking at your build thread aswell alot of work gone into that car such a shame the engine done this :( was gleaming when it went in aswell, best of luck mate hope its not too bad

Bad luck hope you getted it well sorted. Also wondering do you know the fueling you were running I would have thought 1.1 was ok so maybe a chance of a bad injector or the spike was much higher boost ?

since the rebuild is was running on thinner glanza rods, seems like 1.1 bar on 7100rpm was too much for the rod.
was running high octane fuel (100 octane)
everything seemed fine, AFR's were good (11.5 on full boost at high rpm) fuel pressure was good, exhaust temps were good (850 degrees) oil pressure was good (5,5 bars when she went bang)

so everyting seemed in the green at the moment of the bang.
the rod just coulden't take it i'd think

Not good been there done that twice
The last one broke the block in half but it was flat out in 5th
I've got a few spare blocks of needed

Sorry to see that mate, it's made some mess in it's bid for freedom..

I'm sure we'll be able to get it sorted, TGTT's got your back!

Thanks for clarifying fueling It does look like you were doing everthing right. The only thing I wonder was EGT going down I have read under acceleration as you describe temp should go up and EGT temp going down when accelerating would indicate detonation?

@ rev: the exhaust temps were fin and were rising as the revs went up. all was fine.
just a simple case of too much boost on high rpm, snap went the rod

Have stripped the block down today
the dammage has been contained to just the 3rd cylinder/rod

removed the head, all valves are intact.

the 3rd piston is rotated in place, so quite obvious the rod has snapped

the engine ran very well, no deposits on the pistons at all, spark plugs were a nice coffee brown and no damage to any of the pistons so this was no case of detonation

then we removed the sump to see what horrors awaited us
as expected the 3rd rod was snapped, and has made quite a mess of things

after a bit of a hassle i got the broken rod out

2012-06-03%252012.52.05.jpg

i'm a very very lucky person as the crank is undamaged! not a scratch on it and still rotates freely. will have it measured just to be sure.
all the bearrings were in perfect shape, no damage to the crank or block at all.

so i started sorting through my heap of starlet things i have as i knew i had a spare bottom end somewhere with a damaged crank.
block is in good condition so i'll be using my old block, my crank from the destroyed bottom end, had a spare glanza rod/piston that weighs the same as the others i have (2 grams less) so i'll shave 2 grams off the other rods and put the whole thing back together again :)

Cleaned the old bottom end and gave it a coat of primer.
honed the block, checked the clearences, all should be fine

i'll be needing a few things though, my sump was destroyed so will need a replacement. will need a couple of gaskets and a few other little bits. but all in all i should get het back on the road soon

measured the crank today. had a total play of 0.03mm at the center so she's still good to go!

also painted the bottem end again in the same color blue as the old one.

let the rebuild commence

yikes, 1.3 bars is quite steep for a stock rod. boost spike?

still have to check and measure a lot of things but so far it seems i had a lot of luck that the broken rod didn't do any more damage

i have a set of 4 GT rods but 1 end seems slightly bent. so i'm keeping them as spares if i ever get my hands on another bottom end of a GT. one never knows..

been working on rebuilding the block this afternoon, getting along nicely

pistons back in place including the replacement piston i had lying around :)

everything torqued down niely and rotates smoothly as it should
