if your getting the head skimmed or checked its always best to get the block checked at the same time to see if it has warped. the tapping noise and loss of compression usually are signs of headgasket trouble, heard it a couple of times on engines where the head gaskets gone. Hope you get i sorted soon bud!!

the head n tha has been sent off today to be checked again, because it was skimmed last week ive been told it will be ok,but i thought id check it anyway

so over all the head has been off 4 times in a 2 weeks, not really happy
but i do have some good news

once shes all done,im getting an evo hopfully on the weekend

i dont think ill return to the starlet scene though, due to all the haslle and problems ive had

to be fair mate if you did the job properly the first time around ie fully rebuilt the engine, you wouldnt have had these problems..

and you have to go some to warp a block, its not very common at all. are you sure you have torqued the head down to the correct settings, and in the right sequence??

also, why do you think the headgasket has gone? are you just going by a compression checker? is the compression low on all cylinders or just certain ones?

the 4e is a bloody good engine to be fair, i think you are kidding yourself if you believe the evo will be more reliable, for starters they are not so cheap and easy to fix compared to the starbo, when they do go wrong :p lol

just read the prob was with number 3 before, with 20psi compression. the cylinder which had the new piston put in.. would be interesting to see if the compression is still the same on that cylinder, did you make sure you staggered the rings on the pistons correctly ie opposite eachother, as if they are near eachother you would be seing low compression like you are now..

why do i think, cos i took the head off and seen the gasket was fukced, thats how i know it was fuked mate

would you like a pic just incase im getting the part wrong

also torque setting were done as instructed on the package

EVO-plans with that so far is to break it,MLR fourm say its work about 6k in bits, starlet aint worth anywhere near that

Good luck whatever route you go mate, I hope the Evo doesn't sting you.

Just be sure to have a really good look over it, and check for evidence of the classic problems (crankwalk anyone?) and also the clutch, they cost an insane amount to replace...

Dave

cheers dave, lucky i didnt get the evo

put a post on the evo forum and they told me to stay well away from it

so im not going to get it en
