any one having boost control issues using hdi boost controler

Hey Guys,

I have spoken to HDI and if anyone is having problems and they want to send it back then i have a claim form that should be filled out and an address for it to be sent back to HDI Headquarters in Australia.

They stand by their products and do not like hearing people having difficulties.

So if anyone does wish to do this, the form will have to be filled out and the unit sent back to them to investigate why it is faulty. Admittedly it is a fair distance to send the unit back and it will take some time to sort out, but if the unit is found to be faulty then it will be replaced. All the units are tested before they are sent out to comply with sales quality compliance so the units should not be causing issues.

Not everyone is having these problems because i have sold at least 35 of these units and lots of being used effectively aswell.

Again i am just a PM away and if i can provide any info i certainly will but in terms of technical stuff it would have to be HDI as they are the creators and have all the techy knowledge to underpin any problems that are occuring.

Thats good to hear Dane :)

Hi guys, sorry to bump an old thread.

I tried installing my HDi SBC earlier this year (the one that comes with the electronic boost gauge) and everything was working fine, EXCEPT it thought I was boosting at around 12psi while I was idling. I was able to adjust boost and everything but since it thought I was boosting 12psi higher than what I actually was, I was maxing out the controller before I hit my desired boost.

I ended up sending the controller to Hong Kong which is where HDi's service center is. They sent it straight back claiming everything was fine, but I still got the same problems.

A friend of mine reckons I might not have wired it up properly which has caused the controller to read the boost incorrectly. Does anybody happen to have a picture or an explanation of how theirs is wired up? I just wired mine into the stereo bracket, I even soldered the wires to make sure there was a solid connection - is this the proper way to do it?

Cheers :)

there was someone else that ahd the same problem with his guage... was reading boost on idle! dunno if it was 12psi! lol

well i have the other ebc, the sbc-d not the same as you ian, and the solenoids are different so fingers crossed mines ok.

the last time i used my boost controller, it wouldnt hold boost to the redline, it would drop of quite drastically, i just put this down to my hybrid having a crack in the wastegate,

i never got round to seeing if i could correct the problem in the end because i decided to completely change the original direction i was going in lol.

the last time i used the boost controller was about 12 months ago lol

Well iv had 2 friends with issues (both didnt use the rocket switch) their turbos used to flutter massively casuing lots of surge..using the ebc-r

me however iv had it installed since feb, rocket switch is connected via the cig lighter thing, holds boost fantastically even up to 1.5bar (havent tried over yet)..

what i think is the problem is the voltage ur using is not stable, hence why it should be connected via the rocket swich through the cig lighter as maybe it provides a more stable voltage.

alternatively where did u take ur boost source from? (for the controller not the solenoid)

voltage may not effect the correct working of this product, if so it is engineerd badly.
maybe take a look into the powersupply design and improve it with a DC-DC convertor to supply steady voltage.

the effect of fluctation voltage is mostly not looked at, but very effecting on electrical circuits.
but voltage could not only be the problem, i think plumming it correctly should also be taken in mind

Interesting how everybody I've spoken to has told me that slight fluctuations in power shouldn't make a difference to how the controller works... But when I rang HDi customer support they just kept saying "make sure the connection is stable, or the controller won't work". Lazy bastards probably just can't be bothered diagnosing the problem

I've had a new battery installed since the last time I tried using the controller. Might try and get it working again. Should my stereo connections be fine to use or should I try and wire it directly into the ECU?

i would use the rocket arming switch provided ,thats how i connected mine and worked fine

for me that is not a real option.
they should have build a better power suply board.

i have to look into this, but a nice DC-DC convertor board should not cost that much.

i wired mine into a switched feed, but come to think of it i'm running my gauges and SLD off the same feed so could try coming off the back of the cig lighter as that's still switched.

People say about manifolds "buy cheap, buy twice" seems the same applies to boost controllers.

My issues were sorted by removing the Rocket arming switch and wiring straight into one of the ECU powers supplies. Was planning to have the switch working but would rather the EBC working well without it.
