For what it's worth, I've seen a lot of mk1's with blocked radiators. Enough to consider the radiator a weakspot.

ok i get on the phone to dave for a new rad then.

worth a try i wanted one any way.

does any one knoe the thickness of the tanks on the standard rad, as i cant have anything thicker than this

would that cause the above sypmtoms?

Ricky there is some info in the wanted thread for a glanza rad which may be useful to you started by Mike ST205 :)

Kelly,

If the radiator isnt free flowing then it causes a restriction, and will not let the coolant be cooled down. I had this problem with the standard rad in my GT(early days), replaced the headgasket and the rad for a civic one. All was fine after that.

Just phoned a rad place up who said they can have a quick look if drive car there and see if rad is ok? reckon its worth going? or should i just buy one? can they realistically check for sure? or will it just be guesswork?

On my first GT I had a few cooling issues. In fact the motherfucker and I fell out big style..

It ate a headgasket and two waterpumps before I traced the fault to the radiator core being blocked with corrosive mud. After owning and repairing countless other mk1's with the same issues I figured it was a common occurence.

Oh no i hope there is no damage to this hg as it can not be skimmed again and i cannot afford another cruise one :( like i said does not over heat its just throwing an exact amount of water out. Only driven it twice hard and its parked up now.

Reading Kelly's post on page one about it chucking water into the expansion tank and the level dropping, but not overheating, I'd say that was to be expected. I think I'm right in saying that Kelly is running a larger rad than stock (Civic?) and as it holds more water, more will be expelled when it gets hot. The stock expansion tank obviously isn't big enough to hold all of it.

The other thing to bear in mind if you've still got a stock rad is that most of us aren't running anywhere near a stock car, so everything is pushed harder and probably gets hotter.

I'd be tempted to fit a larger expansion bottle.

the rad on the k24 ep82 is similair size to glanza one.

Just worried cos like mentioned above when its thrown this amount into the expansion bottle you cant see the coolant in the top of the rad which in anyones eyes doesnt have enough coolant in there.

In the past the car never did this and it ran even more boost than this.

cheers mate, i just bought that, it's best to pay for that first before wasting 100's on rads etc etc

When the system cools it should suck the water in the overflow back into the radiator.

How strong are the radiator caps being used? It could well be the pressure inside the cooling system destroying gaskets! But regardless, there is pressure in the system, enough to overpower the radiator cap.

I've not had this issue in my GTti, I use the civic dual core radiator with a standard radiator cap.

on my car, it was originally stock 0.9bar cap, when i done headgasket i put a 1.1 bar cap on, but makes no difference

sounds like it could be an internal crack either in the head or block. did you have the head pressure tested? if the headgasket goes that is always best practice as it could be the head causing the gasket to go. ie excess internal pressure. there is very little chance it will be the block but it can happen.
