Oil advice and recommendations here

Can you adjust the thermostat on the oil cooler? You really want the oil to be around 80-100C. Perhaps just use that as an excuse to drive it harder :) You could go for a decent 5w-30 as a replacement, but I think I'd try adjusting the thermostat first.

I think the problem is the thermostat is always slightly open as otherwise there would be a large pressure drop when it did open, I've already taped up part of the cooler core but may need to do a bit more! When I bought the cooler I assumed the thermostat would let the temp get up as normal then keep it at 85.

It is a good excuse and using the turbo is the best way to get the temp up quicker but I always try to wait until the temp is at 80 before doing that - it's an annoying connundrum!

I'll try a bit more duct tape then drop to 5w-30 on the next oil change. :)

Engine size/type - 4EFTE
Mods : 1.2 Bar with all the performance mods and an oil cooler

Currently using 20W/50 without any problems . My mechanic suggested this grade , and said that you need to use a thicker oil for an old motor with performance mods . However upon reading this thread i came to know that i am the only one using this grade of oil .

Am i using the correct grade ? What grade oil do you recommend for me ? I can get hold of 10W/30 easily over here as well

Please keep in mind that i reside in a country with hot temps throughout ( 32-35C+ average temps )

Are you using a synthetic or mineral 20w-50? It's should be okay, but a synthetic is a better choice than a mineral oil

Hi

I would use a 5w-40 synthetic and you will find those through the link below.

http://www.opieoils.co.uk/c-656-5w-40.aspx

Out of those, the best ones are the Fuchs/Silkolene Pro S, Millers CFS, Motul 300V, Redline and Gulf Competition. The Motul 8100 X-Cess, Millers XFS, Fuchs Supersyn, Shell Helix and Mobil Super 3000 are good, cheaper alternatives.

Hi

I'd go for one of the top end 5w-40s, like the Fuchs Pro S, Millers CFS, Redline, Motul 300V or Gulf Competition in the engine

http://www.opieoils.co.uk/c-656-5w-40-engine-oil.aspx

You need a 75w-90 for the gearbox and here are the ones we have.

http://www.opieoils.co.uk/c-673-75w-90.aspx

If you want to go for the best, the Millers CRX 75w-90 NT, Motul Gear 300, Redline MT90 and Millers TRX are ideal for the gearbox. The Castrol Universal, Motul Motylgear and Fuchs Gear Syn are all decent alternatives.

Buddy i am using a mineral oil . Between is this true that one should not use synthetic oil in a engine which was run on mineral oil from the start ?

Hi

Mobil 1 is probably okay, but it is fairly thin, so with a modified higher mileage car, it may get burned off at a fairly high rate. I would use a 5w-40 synthetic

Hello managed to find the hand book and it sayies 10w40 ???

Yes, the standard choice for an unmodified car is a 10w-40. The 0w-40 Mobil 1 is an upgrade in quality over most 10w-40s and fine in a standard car, but as the 0w-40 is quite thin for a SAE40 oil, it isn't always ideal for a higher mileage car as it may burn off or be a bit rattly.
