Oil advice and recommendations here

It could be a coincidence. Which oil is it? Several years ago, when synthetics came out first of all, there were issues with seals and the oil, but then the manufacturers realised that's no good for them and worked on the formula so that decent oil helps prevent the seals from leaking.

They didn't go all at once -)

The oil was Fuchs 5W40 Easter based, which I agree is very very good oil!

The Redline is as good as anything, it's a very good choice for you. The 10w-40 would also be fine for you.

so what's the best between 5w or 10w? i dont use the car in cold winters as i live in malta and only use it on sunny days. that's why i asked for the 5w40. If you could explain the difference between the two it would help me alot as this is my first turbo car. thanks

The 5w-40 is a little thinner than 10w when cold. As it doesn't get too cold in Malta, either is fine for it. If you were in the UK, I'd go for the 5w-40 for the cold start protection.

cheers for the reply! that's helpful. and as i've been reading about oil seals ... does it hurt the seals if I put that type of fully synth oil, my car has a milage of around 140,000kms.

Hey Oilman(s)

I have a freshly build forged engine and i am going too attemt too run 250whp on a TD04L @1,5bar of boost.

Engine is: 4E-FTE 1300cc 16v forged internals, my gearbox is a 6speed 4EFE gearbox that shifts a little bit shocky (alsways done that from new)

I live in Holland so climat is about the same as UK, i had no oil temp gauges before so i am guessing around 85/90 degrees when driving hard.
I use the car for fastroad and going too attemp a bit of track use.

My question is with what oil should i run in the engine and wich oil would be best suited for me? Also my gearbox wil need oil wich do u advise and i heard something of adding teflon too the oil too make the shifting smoother?

kind regards Wes

Hi Wes

I'd try a 10w-40 at first

http://www.opieoils.co.uk/c-657-10w-40.aspx

The best ones are the Gulf Competition, Motul 300V, Redline and Millers CFS.

If it burns a lot of 10w-40, you may need to go on to a 10w-50.

You need a 75w-90 for the gearbox.

http://www.opieoils.co.uk/c-673-75w-90.aspx

If you want to go for the best, the Millers CRX 75w-90 NT, Gulf Competition, Motul Gear 300, Redline MT90/Lightweight Shockproof and Millers TRX are ideal for the gearbox. Just use a good oil rather than adding aftermarket additives to the oil.

Hey Tim,

I see the normal oil i go for on your website is discontinued now :( its the Fuchs TITAN XTR 10w-40 High Performance Semi-Synthetic Engine Oil.

Not sure if its worth changing the grade. I think mine burns oil quite a bit as i cant see any leaks underneath (small drip now and then from my oil sandwich plate)

Non forged 1333cc starlet engine, standard ct9 turbo @ .8 bar boost. Uprated fuel pump, decat, manifold etc..

Any suggestions.
Cheers in advance,
Lewis

Thanks for your reply Tim. I think i'll try a fully sythetic. Any advantages & disadvantages of me swapping? Obviously of course it will burn slower as you said which im hoping will help my issue..

Also, which can you recommend? need 5 litres and dont really want to spend more than £30 if i can help it, but willing too if no choice :p

Cheers,
Lewis

Would 10w 40 be ok? at the min there is 5w 50 pro s but can't afford that any more.
