Declaring Modifications

a mate of mine had a 2 litre turbo astra still registered as a 1.4

he crashed it on the motorway and made a real mess of it. the assessor came out to have a look at the car and didnt know the first thing about cars, they saw the intercooler on the front and said thats a big radiator are you sure thats standard :p failed to see the radiator behind it... oh dear lol.

can garentee though that 90% of people wont be this lucky, however i believe your safer not declaring performance mods than you are visual because alot of assessors dont know about cars so for all they know what engine mods you have could be standard, yet these chavs that go around with big bodykits and have a crash the assessor will come out and bend them over because its easily seen. Not only that how many assessors would have been out to look at a Starlet turbo before? :p

Have declared the conversion, lowering springs, exhaust system, tints and wheels.

havn't declared the FCD, fuel pump, hks actuator and Pressure reg. not really an issue at the moment as the car is off the road, will be declaring everything next time round and bumping up the car's value as it's currenty valued for quite a low amount

some people may think im an idiot but then thats fair enough, everyone is intitled to there own opinion but i wouldn't declare my modifications, insurance companys get enough money as it is, there alll a joke!!!

For peace of mind, declare every major modification that will affect any sort of payout or repair in the event of a crash.

When your sorting your insurance, make sure you have like for like cover and have written proof of it.

I 'thought' I had it on my corolla with Flux, sent in over 5k's worth of receipts and got £700 for the mods back when I wrote off my car back in May. I requested it over the phone when I first did the policy, however when I requested the full policy booklet when making my claim I didn't have it even though I had asked for it.

If you have written proof of like for like modifications, in the event of a crash you'll get it back the way it was or in event of write off get a decent payout.

for policies with delcaring your modifications for like for like, I can highly recommend Sky Insurance.

thanks
Kev

I declare the lot for peace of mind. Insurance Companies tend to be clueless... one wouldn't insure Smiles as they said that a Dump Valve is a high performance modification lol. Assessors tend to be clueless as well... a guy at one of the meets was telling me that he wasn't going to have a succesful claim as he didn't declare his bonnet scoop... it's a GT ffs, they all have them lol...

Speaking from working for an insurance company in the past, I agree all mods should be declared as far as possible, even if they make no difference to the power of the car they should still be listed.

Now my gt is standard but knowing more about cars than alot of the people that i've seen work for insurance companies I understand where you coming from when people don't have clue when they go to assess them or ring up for a quote. Even some the adrian flux guys are little slow when it comes to mods and stuff and keeping paperwork or finding it come to that.

I declared everything although the only thing they were really interested in was mods that changed handling or performance

I'm paying £360 fully comp with Admiral. Got my D2's on the declared list. But as everyone keeps saying, you ring them up and tell them something they just don't have a clue. I would rather be out of pocket and know that i'm fully legal. Only takes for one over active copper to ruin your day.

Quinn-Direct only want to know if the engine CC changes

My spec list is quite long and they insisted on asking does the coilover bouncy system(whats that lol) add more power

At the end they put me down as having an engine change so it will cover all according to them

Who tells the truth...?

I've got insurance with Elephant.co.uk, it cost me about £850 fully comp. But, i haven't told them about any mods yet. Just wondered who has and how much it affected the premium ?

Hi Matt,

I merged your thread with the last big one on the same topic. Have a gander back through the previous replies to get a few answers mate.

Hope it proves interesting for you.

Does anyone know how much I should expect to be paying to insure a standard starlet gt turbo with Quinn Direct?

I can't get a quote until I'm 21 (in two months time). I have 3 years no claims with a full licence held for less than a year.
