who runs aftermarket ecu's?

and for the record........nowhere have i said a preprogramemd ecu is better than a PROPER standalone......or vice versa...lol

yeah toby.....this has been discussed before......but if we can get one good tread here......hopefulyl we could just direct others to it in the future........i cant find the really good one we had on the old site.........lol

so best ot get every1s views here.......will save us time in the future hopefully.........so good to have input from members such as toby, daveburwash, ggti, hardcoreep, gee, hybrid, aga, ivan and ever1 else if possible..........

Very interesting thread. I'm wondering now, the mappable piggybacks or standalone ecu's give highly moddified car the flexibilty needed for proper tuning. Certain preprogrammed ecu seem to have the ability to adjust tuning settings based on what the sensors tell it (octane level changes, boost increased/decreased etc). I wondering based on the tuning levels of the member's car on this site, which option is the most pratical for everyday hassle free driving. Is there a certain limit the preprogrammed ecu cannot surpass and a mappable ecu must be used? Where is that line, when is it crossed?

ah..finally back from my meeting....

dont know if hardcoreep can verifiy......BUT as far as i know one of the fastest EP82 runs a MINES and SAFC (or at least used to)...11 sec car - MINE's AND a SAFC? Kinda defeats the object of a standalone ECU? Plus, as the car I am assuming is based in Japan, they would have the facilities to map the ECU on that actual vehicle.

optimizing your standalone performance is DIRECTLY linked to having a proper tuner AND a proper standalone.....one without the other will lead to sub-optimal performance.........and even when u have both together, many tuners will still tune sub-optimal for safety purposes -Dont the SARD/Mine's etc also have something like this in place? They seem to run rich....

and honestly""""""Who can honestly say thay would choose a Blitz/SARD/Mines ECU over a full standalone ECU if there were NO constraints, such as money, time...good tuner to map etc""""......if i could i would prefer to have the JAM/MINES, BLITZ/OEM ecu programmed for my car mods........i like the little flexibility they give
around certain parameters.........because i use it every day...........and i cant guarantee that if i buy shell gas today with 95 octane (which my car may be tuned for)..........that tomorrow when i buy Esso, it may be 90 oct (my car may blow up) - Hmmm...yes MAPPED to your car. But nobody unless you live in Japland can get this done. Some aftermarket ECU's are also CLOSED loop I believe, so ur car wont blow up if a bad tank of fuel is used.

i think i have something in my ecu.....because even if i havent got 13-14 psi(0.9 bar shown on boost gauge) the management light would pop up on the dash.....and that hasnt happened.....

@ Gee
1)""""MINE's AND a SAFC? Kinda defeats the object of a standalone ECU? Plus, as the car I am assuming is based in Japan, they would have the facilities to map the ECU on that actual vehicle."""car is based in jamaica, so i would assume the sfac is used to tweek the fuelling..this car has been proven time and time again.......and i am sure that full standalones require minor tweeks to suit different scenerios, even if doing the same exact event....the aim is to get a little bit better all the time

2)""""Dont the SARD/Mine's etc also have something like this in place? They seem to run rich....""""" yup they tend to run rich........but sometimes people make it seem as if only the preprogrammed/OEM ecu runs rich........the standalones tend to be set a bit rich also.........however, may not be as rich as the jam/blitz/oem unit ...but some richness none the less........and i can remember your maps were a little rich.....which u are quite happy with

3) """"Hmmm...yes MAPPED to your car. But nobody unless you live in Japland can get this done. Some aftermarket ECU's are also CLOSED loop I believe, so ur car wont blow up if a bad tank of fuel is used."""""""".........u did say """" NO constraints, such as money, time...good tuner to map etc"""" this earlier.......so assuming a perfect world.....that's what i would want

good to hear some standalones will prevent this from happening

wow...this is hard work.....lol

Try again, what A/F are those aftermarked ECU running.

our dyno is forever down....an we only have one on the island........so myslef and newguye cant give our experiences.....but hardcore mentioned his earlier........try dac69er....i think he dynoed using a jam ecu in the last few months...........maybe he would know:rockon:
